Slightly better milk price news?

While UK dairy farmers are reeling from milk price falls of up to 25% over the last year, the collapse of DFB, diseases such as TB and NVZ pressures, they were delighted to receive some better milk price news.

The monthly auction of milk in Northern Ireland by United Dairy Farmers on 20th August produced an average price of 21.54ppl, up from 19.54ppl in July, but still down almost 16% on August 2008. But it was at this time last year that the price slide was in full swing, so this price is still the highest for twelve months.

Meanwhile the on-line auction of WMP milk powder by Fonterra (NZ) on 2nd September provided even better news with a 24.2% rise in price, building on the previous months 25.8% price increase. The price achieved of 58 per tonne is a twelve-month high. The results of the next auction due to be held on 6th October are eagerly awaited by hard-pressed dairy farmers – worldwide.
