2016: The Best Year in My Business

back to News

That headline is what one of my customers told me about the financial performance of his dairy business.  You may wonder what he does, how long he has been farming and how he has achieved this.

• He has been farming as a tenant for twenty years and produces 800,000L per annum which probably represents the average dairy farmer in terms of output.
• He is actually working less hard now than he was five years ago with one full-time labour unit employed.
• Over the last ten years he has focused on what he can control, namely his cost of production.  How has he done this?

By learning from and copying like-minded farmers through a discussion group.2016 Best Year
By buying in bulk and getting value for money input purchases using the buying power of larger dairy farmers.
By continually using more forage in diet.
Whole farm reseeded over last ten years, investing in livestock genetics using AI plus breeding own and now surplus replacements.
He is not on a supermarket contract .

Result; he generated surplus cash in his business last year while repaying £25k debt and paying his rents.  He drew more money from his business last year than he has ever done.  Tax is now one of his biggest bills!
