Choose A Maize Variety To Suit Your System!

back to News

There is plenty of choice in the maize seed market place but what is it that you want? Starch, Dry Matter (DM) tonnes, Early harvest, high ME?

What is the proportion of Maize Silage in the diet? If high, a lower starch variety with high energy would be a sensible choice. Smaller maize forage proportions are likely to require higher starch varieties.

DM – Are the figures on your analysis correct? An Oven test offers more reliable results than an Analysis. The true result may display shortfalls in future maize silage stocks.

Clay soils will be slow to warm up so when maize germinates hybrid vigour is essential, and the capability to mature in both cob and plant in time.

A common result of maize immaturity is low DM, low NDF (Neutral Detergent Fibre) and high Lactic Acid levels, which negatively affect the rumen, reducing the cow’s performance. The result being more concentrate is needed to (a) maintain performance and (b) potentially buffer the ill effects.

High Lactic acid figures on a Silage Analysis can result in overestimation of energy levels shown and is often the factor behind cows milking worse than expected.

Maize needs three key points to grow well, these are drilling at the correct soil temperature (10°C+), little compaction and a good supply of Nutrients. Starter Fertilisers, DAP, Slurry and FYM all play a role in ensuring the Maize plant has sufficient nutrients throughout the season.
