It’s Time To Address Health and Safety On Your Farm

back to News

In recent months, there have been a few words that farmers cannot escape from… Vegans, Brexit and Health and Safety.  It has become harder to ignore the importance of these topics, after all, they are shaping the future of our industry.

Agriculture has the poorest health and safety record of any industry in Britain.  Even though the sector only represents 1.2% of the British workforce, it accounts for 20% of work-related deaths each year!

As a result, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have published plans to carry out a programme of inspections on farms throughout the country.  Inspections will ensure that employers are doing the right thing to protect themselves and their workers by complying with the law and preventing death, injury and ill-health.  If not, the HSE will use enforcement action to bring about improvements.

Are you following Health and Safety Laws on your farm?

If not, why?  Doesn’t every worker have the right to return home safe and healthy every day?

Managing health and safety doesn’t have to be complicated, costly or time consuming.  In fact, it’s easier than you think – especially with the right support.  Protecting people from harm also protects the future success and growth of your business.  Your employees will be able to carry out their work tasks with less difficulty and less danger, improving morale and productivity in your business.  This can save you money and add to your profitability in the long term.

So, where can you start?

The approach you should take to health and safety depends on the size and nature of your business.  The law requires what good management and common sense would lead employers to do anyway; look at the risks and take sensible measures to tackle them.  Also, The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires the employer to appoint a competent person to help you meet your health and safety duties.
