Developing Pig Expertise Programme – AHDB Pork

back to News

Over the next 6 months I will be part of a team of 15 individuals within the pig industry that currently advise pig producers that have been accepted onto the new training program, the aim of which is to provide professional development to advisors within the pig industry and increase knowledge transfer and upskill new entrants.

I applied to be part of the program to increase the value I can add when advising my clients.  I feel that within the pig industry we lack behind other areas of agriculture such as dairy and beef where there is more available training and knowledge transfer.

The training course will cover a range of areas focusing on the below:

• Cost impacts from farm to fork – meeting market specifications and avoiding deductions
• Maximising on farm potential – value of prevention, reducing time and resource waste on farm
• Environmental compliance – Environmental permitting regulations and the future requirements
• Influencing behaviour change – how to put behavioural change into practice on commercial scale
• Adding value in retail – Consumer insight and trends
The training will be taken at a mix of locations, including abattoirs, on farm and office based.
