Farm Safety after dark

back to News

Now that the nights are drawing in and it’s dark before 5pm, we wanted to highlight a few farm safety considerations to think about to ensure that you, your family, and those who visit your business are all kept safe, and accidents are prevented.

  • When it comes to lighting, have you got enough? Are there areas around your yard that fall into darkness and could create a potential hazard?
  • Have you considered LED lighting? These lights are more environmentally friendly and need changing less.
  • Lone working. Do people know where you are? Have you given a rough estimate of how long you will be and what task you are completing?
  • Have you got the What3Words app downloaded on your phone. This piece of technology can provide your exact location anywhere in the country and can be vital information when trying to locate you in an emergency. It also helps lost delivery drivers and tankers find your yard or drive with ease!
  • Be seen. Do you wear reflective clothing? Do you provide this to your employees?
  • What unknown hazards are there on the farm? Are holes filled in and barriers in place? It’s important to consider that whilst you might know your farm inside out, if a delivery driver or farm vet arrived in the dark, would they notice an unmarked hole or broken barrier? Could they trip and fall into a slurry storage? Could they fall from height on uneven ground?

These are just a few considerations to be mindful of when it comes to farm safety. To take a more objective look at farm safety within your business, our rural compliance and farm safety representatives can help provide support to make things less onerous.
