William Waterfield (Andover)
There is a lot to be said for a few simple acronyms. I was introduced to KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid many years ago by a landowner who was averse to spending money requiring endless justification for any form of expenditure. The underlying principle was that it is easy to spend your way out of a problem and much harder to find a simple solution to the problem. Of course, one nearly always knows the cost but cannot guarantee the return that the expenditure will bring.
BOB, ‘Brilliant On the Basics’ are the real drivers of the business. Be it improving soil health or developing rotations where one phase supports the next one reducing the need for expensive inputs, the inclusion of clover in grassland is an obvious example. In the livestock sector, ensuring that one has the right genetics for the system that you are following and that you maximise the use of the cheapest feed are key, along with an environment that allows the animal to express their natural ability.
