Grants Now Available for Woodland Infrastructure and Capital Items

Harry Edwards (Gloucester)

The announcement at the end of January on the new SFI options, payments and an increase to Countryside Stewardship payment rates has overshowed the launch of the Countryside Protection and Infrastructure grants.  These are available to grant fund infrastructure within existing farm woodland such as tracks to help access and management.  All too often grants have been focused on planting new areas of woodland but nothing has been available to help cover the costs of infrastructure to enable effective management of existing farm woodlands.

The work could include the construction of:

  • extraction tracks for mechanised timber extraction to a transfer point
  • haulage roads and turning points
  • haulage road entrances or laybys
  • profiling and paving timber transfer points and stacking areas
  • culverts and other road and track side drainage
  • woodland security, such as gates for new entrance points

The grant will cover 40% of costs incurred and is available to apply for now.  For further information and advice, please contact Harry at harryedwards@fcgagric.com or your local FCG office.
