Mobile Phone Use Whilst Driving

With this year’s great British “summer” finally making an appearance (let’s not hold our breath), there is certainly a significant increase of tractors on the roads.  Whilst I enjoy seeing this, I have recently noticed a lot of these tractor drivers on their phones whilst driving which is alarming for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it is illegal to use your phone whilst driving any vehicle on the road, even a tractor.  Get caught and that’s 6 points on your licence and a hefty fine.  A tractor cab makes the driver so much more visible than in a car, so if you think you’re being discreet – you’re probably not.

Secondly, it is so incredibly dangerous to be so distracted when driving a significantly heavy and large vehicle on a public road, even more so depending on what you are hauling on the back.  The distraction of using a phone whilst driving, paired with the inevitable tiredness farm workers experience this time of year, is most certainly a recipe for disaster.  1% of road deaths include tractors; although these may not always be the tractor’s fault, it’s a reason to stay vigilant when driving one.

I don’t doubt that mobile phones are a great method of communication, especially within the agricultural industry which involves a lot of lone working.  However, using Bluetooth speakers or radios to communicate is by far a safer way by allowing your hands to be free to ensure full control of the tractor.
