Study Tour to Brussels: Innovation, Policy & a Taste of Belgium

back to News

Steph Emmerson (FCG WhiteAvon)

Each summer, FCG consultants come together for our annual Summer Tour a tradition that combines learning, connection, and a fresh perspective on agriculture. This year, our destination was Brussels: the heart of EU policymaking, innovation in agri-tech, and, of course, chocolate.

Day 1: Rooftop Aquaponics – Tomatoes Meet Trout

Our first stop was an urban aquaponic farm perched on a Brussels rooftop. This fascinating setup grows cherry tomatoes and Brussels trout in a closed-loop, sustainable system. Seeing such a productive and efficient model in the middle of a city sparked discussion on how these principles could inspire projects closer to home, particularly around resource use, circularity, and education.

Day 2: A Deep Dive with the British Agricultural Bureau

Our second day was spent with the British Agricultural Bureau (BAB), where we had a full schedule of expert speakers and briefings. Covering everything from CAP reforms and agri-environment schemes to trade policy and farming across Europe, the day offered a unique opportunity to hear directly from those influencing EU policy. These sessions not only deepened our understanding but reinforced the importance of staying connected to the evolving European agricultural landscape.

Day 3: Atomium Views & Belgian Chocolate

To round off the trip, we enjoyed a more relaxed pace with a visit to the Atomium, Brussels’ most iconic landmark, followed by some well-deserved chocolate tasting (and shopping). It was the perfect way to unwind, reflect, and continue conversations from earlier in the week in a lighter setting.

Looking Ahead

This year’s Summer Tour once again delivered on what makes it such a valuable part of the FCG calendar: exposure to new ideas, direct engagement with policy leaders, and time to strengthen the connections within our team. We returned home not just with chocolate in our bags, but with a renewed sense of purpose, new insights, and practical inspiration to bring to our work with farmers and rural communities.

As Chair(Lady) of FCG, I would like to thank all that participated in the organising of this trip, it was an excellent three days away, and I hope that those reading this, when you next meet with your FCG Consultant, you can ask us many questions about our trip to Brussels and be inspired by what we saw.
