Thrings Solicitors Seminar: From Field to Future

I recently attended an agricultural seminar hosted by Thrings Solicitors, at The Royal Agricultural University.  This year, the seminar focused on the future of farming and included opportunities for growth in a “changing rural landscape”.

The event opened with a keynote address from Baroness Minette Batters, former President of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU).  Reflecting on her time leading the organisation, Baroness Batters spoke passionately about the changes she has driven for, and her experiences of the five Prime Ministers she has worked with.  She also shared details of her current work leading an agricultural review, which will soon be published.

Following her keynote, Thrings’ agricultural specialists took to the stage to discuss key legal issues currently affecting the industry.  Topics included planning law—particularly in the context of rural diversification—and natural capital and how we can see it as an opportunity rather than regulation.

Part of the seminar included a discussion between a Thrings partner and the editor of Farmers Weekly.  Their conversation explored the future of farming, current farmer opinion, and the role of agricultural journalism in representing and supporting the farming community.

The seminar concluded with a practical session on succession planning.  The Thrings speakers examined how business structures can influence succession outcomes, especially where farms have diversified operations or include non-farming family members.  The talk emphasised the importance of early planning and tailored structures to ensure the long-term success and stability of farming businesses.

While the sessions did not shy away from highlighting the many challenges facing the sector, I felt the overarching message was one of optimism and resilience.  Like many across the industry, I am very much looking forward to reading Baroness Batters’ Agricultural Review once it is published and hope it will provide the positive direction and momentum our sector needs.
