Our consultants Steph and Jess recently attended the Hutchinsons Strength in Numbers event in Poulton, Gloucestershire. The day brought together farmers and industry experts to discuss the pressures the industry is currently facing, while focusing on practical, achievable ways to improve farm resilience and profitability.

The event started with a close look at current farm costings and machinery. It encouraged farmers to step back and question where money is going, whether machinery is being fully utilised, and if there are opportunities to streamline or rethink certain areas of the business. With margins under pressure, it was a timely reminder of how important regular business reviews are.

One of the standout discussions focused on integrating sheep into arable systems. It sparked plenty of interest, particularly around the benefits for soil health, nutrient management and making better use of land across the year. It was a great example of how small changes to a system can have wider benefits for both productivity and sustainability.

The value of local markets and partnerships was also discussed, highlighting how working more closely with others in the supply chain can open up new opportunities and strengthen margins, especially in a challenging climate.

Overall, it was an insightful and well-attended event, with plenty of discussion and shared experiences. It reinforced the idea that by working together and sharing ideas, farm businesses can put themselves in a stronger position for the future.
