If you are a producer for Arla, you are eligible for their FarmAhead sustainability incentive. The window for submitting the required data closes on the 30th of June. So, what is the FarmAhead sustainability incentive, how does it work and what are the benefits?
FarmAhead links sustainability performance directly to milk price, rewarding farmers for improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact. It forms part of Arla’s wider ambition to reduce on-farm emissions and meet its 2030 climate target. It is a point-based sustainability scheme built into the milk price. Farmers earn points for improving environmental performance, and with each point increasing the value of their milk.
Key areas include feed efficiency, protein efficiency, fertiliser use, land use, and cow longevity. Additional points are also available for renewable energy use, manure management, biodiversity improvements, and training. Farmers can choose to complete an annual Climate Check which covers these areas. Points are then awarded for actions across the farm, contributing to monthly milk payments.
Depending on the criteria they hit, a farm has the ability add up to 2.5ppl for Fat and Protein corrected milk.
The scheme is integrated into milk price, rewards existing best practice, and encourages continuous improvement through data-driven performance measurement.
To get the most benefits from the incentive, farmers need to maintain accurate records and may need to invest in improvements. Extra paperwork will be required, but the scheme aligns with efficient farming practices. Farms will need to complete the Climate Check accurately, focus on efficiency improvements, maintain herd health, review renewable options, and keep consistent records.
