On Tuesday 23rd June, Jessica and I attended the North Wilts Training Group Pre-Harvest Health and Safety Day at Ramsbury Estate.

This annual day is designed to highlight a range of safety issues prior to the busy period of harvest for local farms. Despite the stifling temperatures, it was still well attended by more than 50 people.

Main speakers in the morning included Sarah Stephens from NFU, highlighting legislation regarding road use of agricultural vehicles, Tim Parton from The Green Farm Collective, who gave his views on the importance of good health and safety on farm, Adrian Hares from FCN highlighting the issues regarding mental health in farming, and Ollie Simons form Dorset and Wilts Fire Service, who (very aptly on a day of 30 degree + temperatures) was talking about harvest fire safety.

The afternoon broke into separate stations to highlight the importance of trailer safety and servicing, ensuring grain trailers are in good working order, combine safety to prevent fires, risks from overhead powerlines and what to do, along with operator safety. There were other stations focussing on emergency first aid, and the issues surrounding grain dust, how this causes harm and best solutions to prevent.

This is an important day to really bring to the forefront of the people out doing long hours during harvest of the implications, both short and long term, that can affect their and other’s health and safety. I’m sure the attendees will have taken something away from the day which could make the difference.
