This week has seen the 11th anniversary of the Farm Safety Foundation/Yellow Wellies Farm Safety Week. This excellent charitable organisation works tirelessly to promote a safer environment on farms and agricultural businesses, whilst also visiting organisations, educational campuses, farm shows to get the message across to as many people that we as an industry need to take responsibility for our own health and safety more seriously.
“Farming accounts for 1% of the working population but an alarming 16% of all workplace deaths (HSE Fatal Injuries in Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing Report in GB 2022/2023) A total of 21 farm workers and 6 members of the public, including a child, lost their lives on GB farms over the past year. The picture is similar in Northern Ireland where farming accounted for 38% (3 of the 8) reportable workplace fatalities in 2022/2023 (HSENI) and, in the Republic of Ireland, farming accounts for 8% of the workforce but 40% of all workplace fatal incidents (12 of 20).” Farm Safety Foundation / Yellow Wellies – YellowWellies.org
