Consequences of the Lack of H & S on Farm

Most people hear the words “Health & Safety” and think about all the things to prevent injuries happening, or what injuries are likely to happen. But do many people think about what happens after and the consequences of these injuries?

Firstly, the main consequence is to the injured person – they may be significantly injured and their whole life may now be affected. Worst case scenario, this person may no longer be with us. This not only has a significant impact on the person themselves, but their family too. A life-changing injury is exactly that – life changing.

Secondly, there is the consequence to the employers and/or business. This may not be as significant in regard to the personal aspects – they are not injured themselves – but there are other financial, legal, and moral consequences. The moral consequence is probably the first to kick in – they feel guilty. An employee has been seriously injured or killed whilst working in your workplace – could you have prevented it? Was it your fault? Once the incident has been reported, the remaining consequences begin to appear. If an incident was entirely preventable (on your part) you may be fined and prosecuted. This may be a lengthy process, as well as a painful one, and might even prevent your business from carrying on.

So, when we talk about H&S on farm, and preventing accidents, it is not just for employees benefit to keep them safe – it is to also keep employers safe and to ensure their business can carry on running smoothly. No one wants anyone to be injured, and no one wants a business to fail due to the lack of H&S awareness.
