Are Your NVZ Records Up to Date?

Keeping NVZ records can be tedious, but with increasing EA inspections, it is essential that the records are kept up to date so that you don’t need to scramble for them when it does come to a visit from the EA.

Now is the best time to update your records, as you know your average livestock numbers for the last year, aren’t applying any more nutrients to your crops, and look ahead to the next year. If some or all of your land is in an NVZ, you must keep the following records:

  • Field records of all applications of nitrogen fertiliser and manures, unless you qualify as a low intensity farmer
  • NMax calculations for all your crops
  • Total nitrogen loading on your farm from livestock (this is similar to a stocking rate calculation)
  • Slurry calculations showing that you have at least 5 months’ worth of slurry storage
  • A nutrient management plan to show you are thinking about your nutrient applications for the following year.  There is funding available for this under the SFI scheme.
