Be prepared, it could save you!

Make sure you are doing all you can to prevent and contain any fires during this very busy time.
The last thing anyone needs is the loss of crops and machines.
Important practical precautions
• Ensure your machinery is well maintained everyday it’s used. All greased and oiled ready to work.
• Blow off the dust and chaff regularly, even if it means stopping during the day, ensuring there is no build up of any material that will easily catch a light.
• Ensure all extinguishers are in good working order and accessible if you can get to the fire before it takes hold.
• Have a water bowser or a slurry tanker filled with water in close proximity to where you are working. If the worst happens it may prevent further damage or loss of valuable crops.
• Have a cultivator/disc harrows/plough near where your working. Creating a fire break will help slow the spread of the fire.
Be Prepared
• Make sure you have a source of communication with you at all times. Phones or radios in case you need to call for help
• Know your location – What3 words, grid references. If you need to ring the fire service if you can give an exact location it means they can get to you quicker. The more accurate the details you can give the quicker they will get to you.
• Install What3words on your phone. This give you an exact location to 3 square metres from just 3 different words.
Most importantly, be safe! No piece of machinery or amount of crop is worth risking your life for. These can be replaced, you on the other hand cannot!
